Invasive Species: The Vegetables / 入侵物种: 蔬菜们

I took photos of different vegetables at night time - they were planted by people in one of residential com- pounds in Shanghai. This was illegal and caused lots of trouble between the neighbors and the compound management. I turned these photos into flashing LED light boxes which were governed by program which turned them on and off. At the same time, I made up a series of fictive “conversations” about how the vegetables had evolved with different abilities or super powers to protect themselves. This dialogue was shown on a big screen under the guise of a scientific log. I.e. the conversations from the vegetables were captured by a “high-tech device” which analyzed their “biological signals.” The rhythm of the dialogues were synchronized in time with the flashing light boxes... so when one plant was “talking”, it’s particular light box would light up.

我在晚上拍了各种蔬菜照片, 它们是被人“非法”种在上海某小区绿地内, 造成了邻里和管理层面的许多矛盾。这些照片被做成了可以由程序控制闪亮的LED灯箱。同时我编造了一系列关于这些蔬菜如何进化出了不同的本领或超级能力来保护自己的“对话”, 并将其模仿成是通过“高科技设备”检测分析而出的“植物电波信号”, 显示在一个大屏幕上。这些“对话”的节奏和 LED灯箱同步闪亮。。。因此当某蔬菜在“说话”时, 特定的灯箱就会闪亮。

Cups / 杯子们

I collected those cups in the resting rooms of a supermarket, a factory and two pharmacies. They are used by the staff during their break. Some of the items are recycled bottles or jars meant for various consumable goods, such as tea, coffee, cured fruit, spices... Since about 10 or 20 people have to share the resting rooms, each of them uses a different cup by size, color and material, so that no mixing up is possible. Once I had collected the cups, I put them on a table resting on bricks and put in a dark place, there is a set of mechanic device and timer underneath the table. The cups are filled with water; a beam crosses them, because of the knocking from the mechanic device, it producing a series of reverberations on the wall behind the table.

我在超市,商场和工厂的休息室里收集了这些杯子, 是工人们在轮班休息时喝茶水用的。其中大部分是循环再利用的瓶瓶罐罐,如原来是装茶叶, 咖啡, 腌制的水果, 调味品等...... 因为这些休息室通常有10 或20个左右的人共用,所以每个人都会带来大小,色彩和质地不同的杯子, 以便与别人区分开来。收集了这些杯子后, 我把它们放在一张底下由砖头垫高的桌子上, 桌子下安装着机械装置和继电器, 陈列在一个昏暗的环境中。所有的杯子都装满了水, 一盏射灯打出的一束光通过这些杯子和里面的水, 由于机械装置的敲击, 在桌子后的白墙上形成了一组颤动的反光。

The Manual of the Mustard Seed Garden is an ink painting manual which is familiar to everyone who studied ink painting. I chose sample drawings of the plum blossoms, orchids, bamboos and chrysanthemums -- four plants which are known as “the four gentlemen”. The ancients used ink, but I used plastic shopping bags. I cut out the forms and then mounted them on a wood board with stick pins, to produce a collaged version of the four gentlemen -- a bad copy of the original. The side of the work is mounted with a series of mini fans, which create an awkward mechanical whirr which causes the plastic leaves of the plants to rustle, but when the fans are stopped by the timer, the leaves return almost to their original position.

《芥子园画传》为一本几乎人人皆知的学习中国画的范本，我从中挑选了象征四君子的梅兰竹菊各一幅为范本，古人用墨彩，我用塑料购物袋：用刀裁剪后，用大头针将其一片一片的钉在木板上，组成了这一系列“拙劣的”临摹品。同时安装在一边的风扇向着塑料片吹风，使之迎风而颤并略微失去了原来的形状；但当风扇由于定时器的作用而停止后，它们又恢复了原来的形状。

Installation / 装置

This installation involves bubble machine surrounded by a wire cage; as the bubbles emerge, they will hit the wires of the cage and burst, with only the smallest managing to escape. The whole apparatus is provided a steady supply of bubble fluid administered via IV drip – a sort of life support system for dreams. The work uses humor to create a tension between ideals and realities. The bubble has the intriguing property of reflecting our world in a small round idealized shape but also conveys a sense of speculation, fragility and emptiness.

这个装置在一个大铁笼中放了一个肥皂泡发生器, 当肥皂泡碰到笼壁的铁丝时就会破裂, 只有够小的泡泡才能逃出去。整个系统由一套医用点滴器来持续供应肥皂液－就象某种梦想的生命维持系统。作品用幽默的手法创造了理想与现实之间的冲撞, 泡泡用小圆球般的理想化形状，并以诱人的形式反射着将我们的世界, 但也揭露出一种怀疑、脆弱和空虚。

A true story based on a friend I met in Bradford, UK. She converted to Muslim 5 year ago, the reaction between herself, her family and friend. She was facing to the wall as she was telling me the story, when I am shorting. She said she almost can feel the sound was bouncing back from the wall. (This piece was made during the artist residency program called One Square Mile in Bradford, UK 2009. Thanks for the Visiting Arts UK and Bradford City Council)

一个基于我在英国布拉特福德认识的朋友的真实故事。一位归入了伊斯兰教的白人姑娘，她没有嫁给穆斯林男人，也不带头巾，而且家庭出身是传统的天主教。这个现象使艺术家对当地习俗和宗教特别感兴趣，并拍了一部录象作品：让她自己面对着墙壁述说她五年前归入穆斯林时，她自己，朋友和家人对她的看法。她说她几乎可以感觉到从墙壁反弹回来的声音。(这件作品拍摄于艺术家工作室项目：“一平方英里”期间。英国，布拉特福德，2009。感谢Visiting Arts和布拉特福德市政厅)

The glaciers looking sculpture was made from 180 KG ice-cream, underneath is a metal tray by 300 cm long, 120 cm wide and 15 cm tall. I spent almost 4 hours to make it inside a freezing truck. After it presented on the table, 75% of the 'glaciers' was eaten by more than 500 people who came to the opening during 4 hours, the rest was melted.

这个形状如冰山的雕塑是由180公斤的冰淇淋做的，装在一个为长300厘米，宽120厘米和高15厘米的大铁盘中。我在冷库车内用了将近4小时的时间堆砌而成。做完端出来之后，在开幕式的4小时内，75%的“冰山”被500多位来宾吃掉，剩下的则逐渐化掉。

There are 16 arms behind me holding some random toys, tools and food items, all made in China. I bought them from a supermarket in Luxembourg, where I paid almost ten times the price of what they would cost in China. This performance piece was made during the Art Workshop at Casino Luxembourg.

Two kaleidoscopes and closed-circuit cameras are installed around the museum. Slow-moving electric motors cause the kaleidoscopes to spin and swing, while the cameras capture the images for projection onto the walls of a hexagonal room. The motion of the kaleidoscopes and the constantly-changing input ensure that the image is always new, continuously transforming everyday scenes from inside and out of the museum into surrealistically moving wallpaper. Device with kaleidoscope and close-circuit camera made from mirror, crystal ball, plastic tube, nylon gear, motor, cable, stainless steel box, and camera; hexagonal room includes 6 projectors and a projector synchronizer; dimensions variable.
The audio part is made by sound artist Ben Houge: Audio signals from two microphones are fed into a computer running custom software created in Max/MSP. Environmental sounds are delayed, pitch-shifted, and filtered, transforming them into hovering harmonies, swooping glissandi, and pulsing rhythms. Real-time, algorithmic audio manipulation allows the sound to continually change and evolve without looping，eschewing simple cause and effect relationships to create a more ambiguous environment in which viewers can ponder their ever-changing relationship to the world around them. Real-time computer-manipulated sound, 2 speakers, 2 microphones; dimensions variable.

2个万花筒和监控摄像头被安装在美术馆的内外。慢速的电动马达使万花筒旋转并摇头，同时通过摄像头将捕捉到的视频图像通过投影仪投射到一件六角型房间的墙上。万花筒的转动及持续变化的图像输入使得六角型房间内的影像变幻莫测，每天不断的将美术馆内外的景象变成超现实般移动的墙纸。万花筒和监控摄像头的装置由镜子，水晶球，塑料管，尼龙齿轮，电动马达，电线，不锈钢盒子及监控摄像头构成；六角形房间还包括了6个投影仪和1个投影仪分频器；尺寸可变。
声音艺术家Ben Houge创作了音频部分：从2个麦克风采集的音频信号被输入了计算机，通过用Max/MSP软件量身定制的程序，环境的声音被延时，音高变调及过滤，从而它们变成了悬停的和声，突然上下摆动的滑音和时而间断的节奏。用这种实时及程序逻辑的音频处理使得声音不重复的变幻和演化，避免了简单的因果关系从而创造了一个出乎意料的环境－在这里面－观众能够沉思他们与此变幻莫测世界之间的关系。实时计算机处理的声音装置，2个音箱和2个麦克风；尺寸可变。

I made a special countdown for Intrude 366. I used myself as the "living medium" to cover and witness the last 100 Intrude projects. During those 100 days, I was “the most loyal fan of Intrude: Art & Life 366”. During this period of time, I went to the sites of each Intrude project if I was in Shanghai. If I was out of town, I took a specially-made countdown gadget with me and sent a picture showing the countdown gadget in other cities to Intrude website.

我给介入366做了一个特别的倒计时。我运用自己的“肉媒体”来报导, 见证介入的最后一百个方案实施。这最后的一百天，我是”介入最忠实的观众”。当我身在上海时，我去了每个介入日的现场，而当我离开上海时，我带着我特制的倒计时牌一起旅行，并且与介入的网站实时同步，每天传送一张在异地拍摄的倒计时照片。

About Intrude 366 / 关于介入: 艺术生活366

Intrude: Art and Life 366 is an ambitious interdisciplinary and cross-cultural public art event organized by the Zendai Museum of Modern Art in Shanghai, China. Upon first examination, the wallpaper appears to be little more than a modern, perhaps psychedelic pattern. But closer examination reveals something more subtle, and more playful: the pattern is made from different logos. There is a third key layer to this work: the images underlying the various logos were taken at Shanghai recycling centers and garbage dumps, and depict various types and degrees of consumer waste.

第一眼看了，墙纸给人的感觉是有迷幻感的现代图案。但第二次靠近了仔细观察之后，才显示出某些更巧妙及隐晦的，更具游戏性的东西：图案是由不同的标志构成的。这件作品关键的第三个层面：在图像中不同标志的轮廓下隐藏着从上海的各个垃圾场和垃圾回收站拍来的照片，并显示了不同程度和不同类型上的消费品浪费。

Luxurious Riffraff / 琳琅满目

I spent almost three months collecting garbage from the recycling center near where I live, choosing the items by color, shape and original function. Since most people in Shanghai don't separate their garbage from their recyclables, the recyclables were often filthy. I had to sterilize them before assembling them into the installation. Washing and cleaning the garbage has become a process of creation and also self-education. Following the sorting and cleaning, I strung the items together using thin wire ropes of different lengths and hung them from the ceiling in the middle of the gallery space (Art Labour gallery). It looked like a colorful “chandelier” from a distance. And since the gallery has two big windows it generated a lot of attention from passers-by during the exhibition – one person even found one of their own previously discarded belongings!

我花了将近3个月的时间，在家周围的垃圾回收中心收集了很多垃圾, 根据其色彩, 形状和本身的功能来选择它们。因为大部分的上海人没有垃圾分类的习惯, 这些可回收垃圾常常是十分肮脏并臭气熏天。因此在制作装置前，我得将它们消毒并清洗干净，这个过程更象一种自我教育。然后我用不同长短的钢丝绳将它们串在一起，最后挂在画廊(Art Labor Gallery)中心的天花板上。它远看就象一个色彩丰富的“吊灯”。由于画廊是临着街，展览期间很多路人常常会隔着2扇大玻璃窗驻足观看－某人甚至找到了一件他曾经拥有的物品！

The inspiration is from the earthquake in Sichuan Province, after the earthquake, the whole country stopped and observed 3 minutes silence at 14:28, May 19th 2008, but with the sound of siren. By put together randomly with all the photos I have been taken during 8 years in China, I want to raise the issue that life is very fragile, but the question is whether the force of nature or ourselves that makes life become fragile...

在2008年四川的地震发生后，整个中国在5月19日下午14时28分停止一切工作活动，在防空警报的鸣声中集体默哀3分钟，沉痛悼念汶川大地震遇难同胞。我将在上海八年来随手拍的照片做成这部动画：生活是脆弱的，但问题是自然本身的力量还是人为的力量使得生活变的脆弱......

About 30 free range chickens at the Braziers International Artist Workshop (London, UK) were supposed to be slaughtered the next day to feed the artists. I fed them their last supper of rice by drawing the head of Colonel Sanders on the ground... (The whole performance lasted 2 hours and 50 minutes on 11th August, 2008)

在英国伦敦郊区的Braziers国际艺术家工作坊内散养着大约30头鸡，第二天它们即将被宰杀并成为驻场艺术家的盘中餐，我用大米在地上画了个山德士上校的肖像，以此作为它们最后的晚餐...... (整个行为过程持续了2小时50分钟，2008年8月11日)

The video is shot in a small village in Zhejiang Province, (China) where 50% of the world’s Christmas decorations are made by hand. The family workshops were doing the ornaments all year along and the landscape had been littered with garbage. The video has been edited into a 9-minute video and screened it inside a small wooden box wrapped like a Christmas present, people only can see the secret from a small peep whole on the box.
(This work was part of Christ MASS Production – a site specific installation project)

这部录象拍摄于一个浙江省的小村子，全世界50%的圣诞装饰用品都来自与此，手工作坊里的工人一年到头都在手工加工这些圣诞饰品，同时这里的环境变得越来越差。录象被编辑成一部9分钟的短片并放入一个如圣诞礼盒般的装置内播放，观众只能从圣诞礼盒的小孔中观看。
(这件作品是《圣诞效应 - 特定装置项目》一个部分)

Christmas is becoming a very important holiday in contemporary Chinese culture, a symbol of increasing purchasing power and growing consumer desire. Young people go shopping, go out dining and drinking, they even go out partying until the wee hours of the morning on Christmas Eve. Every restaurant has a Christmas menu. Every mall has a Christmas discount. Every bar and club has a Christmas party. It’s all a big advertising campaign to encourage people to spend money. To express our new branded landscape, I play a tricky game by mixing various brand logos into traditional Chinese patterns. At first glance, they look just like traditional Chinese patterns, but a deeper look reveals an insight into Chinese consumer culture. , If you look closely at the snowflakes, you’ll see that they’re composed of many different logos arranged in a radial pattern. It’s a snowflake of brands, which provokes the question: “What is this the true meaning of contemporary Christmas?”

圣诞节正在变成当代中国文化中一个非常重要的节日，一个日益剧增的购买能力和消费欲望的象征。年轻人已开始习惯性的在这此期间购物，吃喝，玩乐并派对到圣诞夜的凌晨。每家餐厅都有一份圣诞菜单，每幢百货大楼都有一个大减价，每家夜店都有一个圣诞派对。它就象是一个巨大的鼓励大家花钱的广告。为了表现我们全新的品牌化风景，我拿这些品牌标志开了个玩笑，把它们组合成图案。这些图案给人第一眼的感觉是传统的中国纹样，但仔细看的话就会发现它们是由这些品牌标志构成的，就如当今的消费文化一般！如果你仔细观察这些雪花，它们已经变成了由不同标志所组成的对称图案，是“品牌化”了的雪花，因而提出了一个问题：“什么是当今圣诞节的真正意义？”

He just love Nike, the shoes, the shirts, the hats. There is not a piece of clothing he own that doesn’t bear the Nike logo. One morning he realized that even his shit was shaped like a Nike Logo. He wonder, is there something wrong with his stomach or his mind. (No turds were harmed in the creation of this poster. Poo made from plastic putty and oil paint)

他爱死耐克了，它的鞋，衣服，帽子...... 几乎他所有的衣服都有这个标志。直到有天早上他发现自己大便的形状也象耐克标志，他也纳闷了，到底是自己的胃出了问题还是别的什么？
(在拍摄过程中没有便便受到侵害，大便是由橡皮泥捏的并涂上了油彩)

The tattoo pattern is made from couple popular brand logos, it can be wear in different way of cutting. By doing this, I want to make everyone realize that branding is so strong in everywhere, and it came cross into everyone’s mind so subtle that you almost don’t realize! Almost 300 people wear the tattoo in 6 hours during a one day festival called NeoSpring.

贴纸纹身的图案由几个著名商标构成，它可以剪成不同的形状并有不同的贴法。以次我希望每个人都能意识到无处不在而且强烈的品牌化影响，它们已经潜移默化的深入人心！在持续了一天的新茶创意文化节上，300多人在6个小时内贴上了这个贴纸纹身。
